Lyndie Dourthe's work makes me grin from ear to ear, makes my heart race and makes me wish I could have one of every thing she makes in every room of my home. Dreams and fantasies captured under glass or in a painted box, embellished with beads and sequins, paper cut-outs, embroidery and sometimes feathers! The amazing thing about Lyndie's work is not just the beauty and creativity on display but, that each little curiousity is also a jewel. This elephant is a brooch, these are pins, this is and these are too. "In my work,I always take inspiration from nature and natural history. I started my collections, making only flowers, but in time, I wanted to expand my explorations. So, I made collections about birds, anatomy, mushrooms, potatoes and roots, etc. Then one year ago, I started my collection called "Elopoica" ( the name is a contraction of 3 animals names in French: ELEphant-POIsson-CAmeleon) It is a collection of animals, but magic animals, sacred."
Lyndie says she " likes to create stories" around her pieces(for example: in the presentation) Whether it be a glass dome, upside down cup or a box they become little "cabinet de curiosites" as in the 18th and 19th centuries. Even the photos on Lyndie's site are beautiful and make it very easy to believe that it is "like a little theater with my own characters" where Lyndie can create her own "nature" with " new species" of her own design. The beauty and drama inherit in Lyndie's pieces are tempered by a wonderful sense of whimsy and playfulness. As if to prove my point, when I asked Lyndie "how does this piece make you feel when you look at it?" she replied- "Well, I really don't know doctor! ;) " Adorable! Well, I know what it makes me feel.....Euphoria! I thank you for sharing your work with us Lyndie, here is to many more "characters" and many "new species".
