Gretchen's beautiful and dreamy collage work is new to me, but perhaps some of you are already fans! I look at this piece of hers called "dreaming in color" and I think of fantasy, summer nights and, of course, dreams! Talking with Gretchen was an absolute pleasure. She is lovely and relates such an interesting journey behind this work. This being one of Gretchen's personal favorites, she says it all began with the "tree". During the collage process, inspired by the hope of spring, the tree took shape in the center of the piece and was white, it moved around a bit and finally settled in and became black. Butterfly wings grew on the little flying squirrel(something that would become a reoccurring image in her work) and Gretchen began to dream at night again after "..months of not remembering my dreams or, for a time, only remembering unpleasant ones." This is where the title comes from and when Gretchen looks at this piece now she sees "metamorphosis", hope, and peace. I love the idea of this work growing and changing with Gretchen and her life experiences. To me that makes the work even more beautiful and meaningful. Thank you so much Gretchen for your lovely work and thoughtful response. Be sure to check out Gretchen's shop and other work (paper and paintings) here!
