This whole series of Zoe's is so gorgeous to me: evoking thoughts and memories of my honeymoon in the south of France, sunsets on the ocean and filled with potential for the viewer. They also make me feel incredibly peaceful, so it is fascinating for me to hear Zoe's inspired ideas behind this series called: "where we were and are".
First of all, these are all fictional "passages of land and sky" all from Zoe's memory and imagination. The idea is to present us (the viewer), with something familiar and unknown at the same time. One of Zoe's paintings may "look" familiar at first but, then on closer inspection you realize that they could be A LOT of different places familiar to everyone or no one.
" Paradoxically in encountering the unknown and the familiar, personal reminiscence is evoked. The paintings become the means of travel. Memory becomes the territory to be re-discovered"
I immediately thought of Provence...the colors there, a painter we saw and loved on our travels... the ocean, because in my memory, the sun sets in glorious colors like this. But, to you it may evoke something completely different. Care to share? :)
Zoe says when she looks at her work she knows each piece has a perfect owner and she cannot wait "until they get to own it!" She also feels so blessed to be doing what she is doing and to "be my own boss." If there is a bit of mystery in Zoe's work she herself isn't always able to explain it. "I always think, how did that get there? Especially the good ones, they are a complete mystery, like all great things in life, they come with ease and they are the product of grace in my life!"
Zoe, thank you so much for sharing that grace with us and for enabling us to "travel" to far off places (perhaps familiar, perhaps not) through your beautiful art.
